100 Best Kitchen Design Ideas for Your Home

kitchen design photos

Featured on both the walls and cabinetry, mint green is a beautiful way to add a subtle splash of color to your kitchen without stealing the show. Brass hardware adds warmth to the green paint and white backsplash. Install a pull-out cutting board near your favorite spirits to create a flexible bar area where your inner mixologist can come to life. This colorful patterned backsplash adds drama and showcases inky blue kitchen cabinets. An island that pairs wood and stone adds a natural element to the open kitchen. Because a rustic kitchen doesn't have to mean traditional and cottagey, there is the side of rustic style that's more boho and would suit modern kitchens.

Interesting Wood

This is then brightened by the white wooden kitchen island and its white wooden stools. The wooden cabinetry of this Craftsman-style kitchen that has two kitchen islands is at the front and center as the highlight. The three shades of classic shaker cabinets and drawers give this kitchen a certain degree of complexity that boasts of superb skills.

Who ever said that storage is boring, or that function cancels out any fun factor?! And voila - ‘shelfie’ worthy storage jars with playful, eye-catching allure. ‘The cottage core trend is the epitome of The Good Life, drawing inspiration from the countryside with its sprawling meadows and wildflowers. The kitchen is the heart and soul of the home, where households and families congregate, cook, socialise and share mealtimes and happy moments together. Create a welcoming space, full of cozy flock-and-gather appeal with usable kitchen essentials that exude character and tactile appeal.

Beautiful Kitchen Design Ideas You Need to See

While some might fear clutter, take this as an opportunity to embrace it. The mix of sizes, colors, and styles packing these open shelves gives a collected feel to this bright and airy kitchen. Colors that sit opposite each other on the color wheel (think green and red, or purple and yellow) give a room a dynamic feel. Whittney Parkinson Design used this color theory to bring in opposite shades of blue and copper and add some visual excitement to the space. Molly Kidd of Light and Dwell played off of the surroundings of her Oregon home to create a soothing earth-toned escape. Shades of soft green, natural wood, cream and gray give this kitchen a serene vibe.

Kitchen islands are a place to perfect your cooking skills as well as enjoy the delicious outcome. This black-and-white waterfall-style stone kitchen island beautifully contrasts with white oak base cabinets. A white paneled refrigerator fades into the background, allowing the island to take center stage.

‘In a small kitchen there are so many factors to consider such as lighting whether natural or artificial which all influence the space. Generally speaking, due to the small expanse of space, a lighter shade will work best for a small kitchen. However, a bold darker color or deep, rich hue will give the impression of a cozier environment. Lighter colors will draw in natural light, illuminating dark corners can make the space seem quite larger than it might be. Looking for kitchen ideas that make an impact even in a small space?

Large windows with black trim and rustic wood open shelving reinforce the expansive feel. Black fixtures deliver contrast amid white cabinetry and shiplap walls. When it comes to kitchen ideas, we do tend to think of traditional wall and floor cabinets as being a must, but what if in fact all your space needed was a sizable kitchen island? Keep the walls and floors at the edges of your room free of furniture and just have a kitchen island in the center – sink, oven, and storage all built-in! U-shaped kitchens are designed with cabinets and countertops along three walls, forming a "U" shape.

‘Kitchen layout should be determined fundamentally by the activity centers. We like to use the framework of the ‘working triangle,’ which consists of areas for preparation, storage, and cooking. One example of this approach is to arrange the sink and prep area, range, and refrigerator in a triangle. We also must take into account that the modern kitchen layout has expanded in ways. Now there are secondary dishwashers and secondary sinks, coffee makers, and secondary cooking positions.

The rich dark wood flooring of this elegant dine-in kitchen blends perfectly with the dark wooden dining set as well as the shaker cabinets and drawers of the kitchen structures on the walls. They complement the stainless steel appliances making them pop out. This is a bright galley kitchen with a bright and white high ceiling that is arched and filled with skylights and recessed lights.

Statement lighting and bright white walls open up to a sunroom, letting natural light flood the contemporary kitchen. This beautiful kitchen with mountain views is the perfect mix of modern with nods to its western location. A range hood clad in reclaimed wood contrasts clean white cabinetry and warms up light-gray accents on the wall and tile backsplash. Employ clever kitchen organization to give a sense of structure to open storage.

Use it as a creative outlet for artwork or doodles, or add functionality by jotting down grocery or chore lists. This magnetic rack easily attaches to the side of a refrigerator, allowing you to hang towels, measuring cups, salt and pepper shakers, and more. Incorporate natural materials and mineral elements like marble and wood to display perfectly imperfect patterns, accentuated with metallic details for a luxurious and striking overall aesthetic.

The roomy work zone gives the chef elbow room and counter space, while the island and adjacent eating area provide spots for guests to chat. A shiplap ceiling, white cabinets, and touches of color amplify the cozy atmosphere. A white herringbone backsplash allows colors to pop in this neutral kitchen. Installing backsplash tile on an entire wall can make a small kitchen feel bigger. Beautiful blue ceramics stand out on the open shelves, while brass cup pulls continue the traditional kitchen style.

While warm, neutral color schemes, natural-influenced materials, and seamlessly integrated floor plans are du jour, there are other signature identifiers of a modern kitchen. Pops of color ensure that these contemporary kitchen designs still feel warm and welcoming, as do big windows that let in the sun, an architectural light fixture, or a piece of bold artwork or decor. Luxurious statuario marble clads kitchen walls in earthen opulence. A large island and white cabinetry with gold hardware provide a clean palette for pops of happy color.

Despite being able to see almost every appliance and dishware, color-coordinating bright pots, pans, and bowls keep glass-front cabinets and floating shelves tidy. White subway tile, stone countertops, and wood surfaces balance charcoal gray cabinets. It's where you cook favorite recipes, entertain guests, and serve up late-night snacks. For a room that gets so much traffic, it's essential to have a functional area that also lets your personality shine. From colorful cabinets to creative tile applications, there is something for every style and kitchen floor plan layout.

Graphic Design CalArts School of Art

grunge graphic design

Designers embraced this gritty and rebellious aesthetic, incorporating distressed elements, bold typography, and DIY-inspired visuals into their work. Such statements contradict the DIY mentality and the punk ideology itself, as Chantry is promoting a clothing brand. This indicates how such approach had become a fashionable statement and how easily appropriated DIY or grunge could be. Art Chantry in his design is promoting on the surface anti-consumerism and anti-capitalism, even when considering the discussed DIY slogan and title. He is promoting Urban Outfitters products, associating the DIY, anti-mainstream punk ideology and aesthetic to the brand identity.

What Kind of Motifs and Themes Are Commonly Found in Grunge Art?

Rather than embracing the new millennium’s tech-optimism, it emphasizes the rejection of mainstream and DIY culture. Grunge graphic design breaks all the rules; with distorted fonts, authentic images, and clippings, as well as layered textures and torn edges. This can be tied to today’s “anti-design” trend, carried over from the 90s. To embrace a Grunge design style this year, ditch the white space and pristine elements. Chris Ashworth’s design for Ray Gun, features photography from Seattle photographer Charles Peterson of Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam).

The Graphic Design Program at CalArts fosters the next generation of graphic designers through rigorous inquiry, fearless exploration and innovative making within a tight-knit studio community. The program’s curriculum is based on the Institute’s critical approach of contextualizing praxis in history, theory and broad cultural literacy, and in the Graphic Design program’s inclusive pedagogy. We aim to educate the whole student through focused metier coursework, engaged mentorship, robust critique, cross-disciplinary exploration, and fearless making in a vibrant, intimate studio community. Everybody Loves Our Town captures the essence of the grunge era in the words of the musicians, journalists, club owners, publishers, or just hangers at clubs.

Affordable Grunge Fashion Brands For An Edgy, 90’s Look

Amidst the chaos of the grunge design revolution stood a luminary figure – David Carson. Don’t forget to embrace the undone hairstyle and go for natural, dewy makeup to complement the laid-back summer vibe while staying true to the grunge aesthetic. I typically search “grunge clothing” and find a variety of grunge shirts and sweatshirts.

While trends come and go, grunge’s legacy endures as a testament to the power of rebellion and authenticity in design. Grunge design didn’t merely fade away with the turn of the millennium; its rebelliousness continues to echo through the corridors of contemporary graphic design. Ray Gun was not just a publication; it was an embodiment of Carson’s revolutionary design philosophy. It was here that Carson’s designs became iconic and inspired designers worldwide. Surfing wasn’t just a hobby for Carson; it became an integral part of his design DNA. It fueled his motivation and steered his success in directing and designing various magazines, websites, and advertisements for notable brands within the surfing, snowboarding, and skateboarding realms.

Telling the whole story, the rise of the Seattle cash-poor, to the tragic deaths of its superstars, like Kurt Cobain, the book is a unique history of this cultural, music and art’s phenomenon. The infamous “Word Art” of Microsoft Word arrived along with Windows 95. This style provided a “futuristic” look at the time, likely influenced by Blobitecture buildings (or “Blobism”) built during this era. With the resurgence of early 2000s fashion trends, we are also seeing a comeback of sorts in Y2K design trends like Vaporwave, Grunge, and 3D Text. This era brought with it chrome, oceanscapes, tropical oranges, shiny whites and black linework, as well as designs with icy blue hues. As the exemplified designs of Chantry`s work in The Rocket reveal, Chantry built the grunge aesthetic with his messages and designs.

1985: Roots, predecessors, and influences

Although the design has a number of irregular elements such hand-drawn doodles and dirty background image, it doesn’t feel dirty. One of the best ways to predict what’s next in design is by looking at what was popular over the past few decades and digging into niche aesthetics. Whilst Y2K and Frasurbane are enjoying their comeback, what’s next? The trend for Y2K (the year two thousand) design was prominent in the mid to late ’90s in anticipation of the millennium. It’s characterized by a futuristic, high tech and sleek look using mostly white, silver and blue tones with the occasional pop of bright yellow or green.

Grunge style in graphic design continues to influence modern design trends, albeit in more refined and stylized forms. It remains a versatile and evocative style, often used to convey a sense of authenticity, edginess, or nostalgia in various design projects. Absolutely, grunge fashion often goes hand in hand with specific makeup and hair styles that complement the overall aesthetic. For makeup, think about a slightly smudged or smoky eyeliner, dark and moody eyeshadow shades, and matte or deep-colored lipstick. Embrace a “bedhead” hair vibe with tousled waves or messy curls. Leave your hair slightly unkempt, and you can even consider adding some temporary hair color, like subtle highlights or a streak of a bold shade, to add a touch of rebellious flair.

Greek Pottery – History of Ceramics in Ancient Greece

Tearing up paper, scanning and warping prints and textures and pushing these further in Photoshop creates a standout aesthetic that is less traditionally user friendly and more punk. The early ’90s saw a significant hangover from the hugely popular Memphis design movement that dominated the 1980’s. Founded by architect Ettore Sottsass, Memphis was a wildly exciting and creative reaction to Sottsass’s boredom with modernist design. Before long, Carson was making big waves in the world of graphic design.

The grunge generation is described as a generation which grew up on Heavy Metal, Punk, and Hardcore. The resulting aesthetics combined the various musical elements, but in its essence, reflected the anti-authority attitude of Punk[4]. Some of the leading grunge authors, such as the designer David Carson, helped create a new style of typography and design, and it is in this field that the most important quality of grunge art resides.

Let’s dare to experiment, challenge norms, and infuse our designs with the unfiltered, rebellious spirit that defines grunge. Grunge’s revival isn’t a mere replication of past aesthetics; it’s a reinvention that blends vintage elements with modern techniques. From posters and album covers to websites and social media graphics, grunge elements find their way into diverse design projects. Its resurgence in modern design trends showcases its enduring appeal.

Digital brushes can mimic the effect of painting, sketching, and inking, allowing designers to infuse their work with a sense of tactility that Grunge demands. With digital tools, artists can blend scanned images of traditional media, hand-drawn elements, or typography with digital art, resulting in innovative expressions of the Grunge style. Grunge art emerged as a rebellious and raw artistic movement in the late 20th century, deeply rooted in the underground music and alternative culture scenes of the time. Characterized by its gritty, distressed aesthetic, Grunge art defies traditional norms and embraces imperfection, often incorporating elements of collage, graffiti, and DIY techniques.

If you're pressed for time and looking for 90s logo design templates, make sure to check out Envato Elements and GraphicRiver for amazing assets. The enduring appeal of grunge lies in its embrace of imperfection and authenticity, values that resonate strongly with contemporary movements emphasizing individuality and personal expression. Collages created from these elements can further the aesthetic, resulting in a layered, deep visual experience.

Check out fashion inspiration from Kurt Cobain, Drew Barrymore, Kate Moss, and River Phoenix. As a creative professional, I’m hands-on, I design, and I write. Accordingly, I’m an expert at Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Premiere. Specifically, my strengths on the photography side are image editing, compositing, color correcting, and retouching. On the design side, I have a strong command of type and layout.

Grunge’s influence reverberates through modern design movements, shaping emerging trends and ideologies. Its impact on modern graphic design serves as a catalyst for designers to embrace imperfections, experiment with unconventional elements, and infuse raw authenticity into their creations. Grunge graphic design gained popularity primarily during the 1990s, particularly in the early to mid-’90s.

Baghdad History, Population, Map, & Facts

baghdad's house of wisdom

Caliphs were giving the translation movement, transmissions, authoring and intellectual achievements a very high level of respect and support that represented key factors to getting hold of the Hellenistic, Indian, and Persian knowledge and wisdom. After the invasion of Baghdad by the Mongols in (656 AH-1258 AD) they wrecked the library's private and public closets of books, manuscripts, maps, observatories...etc. They burned majority of the collections whilst others were thrown into the Tigris river, some say that the Mongols have built their barns using books instead of clay.

Further, it was also linked to astronomical observations and other major experimental endeavors. The older core of the city, a rectangle about 2 miles (3 km) long and 1 mile (1.6 km) wide, is located on the east bank. Its length extends between two former city gates, Al-Muʿaẓẓam Gate, now Al-Muʿaẓẓam Square, in the north and Al-Sharqī Gate, now Taḥrīr Square, in the south. From the Tigris the rectangle runs eastward to the inner bund, or dike, built by the Ottoman governor Nāẓim Pasha in 1910.

Baghdad’s Libraries Were So Impressive They Astonished European Scholars

How an Artist Is Rebuilding a Baghdad Library Destroyed During the Iraq War.

Having built Baghdad in 762, Caliph al-Mansur (ruled 754–775 CE) moved the capital of the Abbasid dynasty there from Damascus, soon making it the richest and largest city in the world. Muslim historian al-Tabari reported that Christian monks once prophesied that a lord named Miklas would one day build a spectacular city around the area of Baghdad. The caliph was delighted upon hearing this ancient prophecy—after all, as legend has it, al-Mansur was called Miklas as a child. In modern times the library became a symbol of the scientific enterprise and imperial glory of the early Islamic period. It is frequently imagined as a centre of scholarship and collaboration for the greatest minds in Baghdad and its environs as well as the heart of a robust translation movement of Persian, Greek, and Syriac literature into the Arabic language. The Muslim libraries have played a major role in translating and transmitting works of Greek, Persian, Indian and Assyrian physicians and philosophers, works that later became the basic textbooks in European schools of Bologna, Naples and Paris.

Tradition of Learning

Recreational centres include two islands in the Tigris that have swimming pools and cafés, the Lunar Amusement Park, and Al-Zawrāʾ Public Park and Zoo. Beginning in the early 1990s, traditional patterns of recreation for city residents were disrupted by war and economic hardship. Although a prosperous class of government and party officials and wealthy merchants continued to frequent private clubs, most residents spent their free time either at home or visiting close friends or relatives. At its height, Baghdad was estimated to have over one and half million people living in the city.[19] It may have been the largest city in the world during that time.

History of Baghdad

Translations of this era were superior to earlier ones, since the new Abbasid scientific tradition required better and better translations, and the emphasis was many times put in incorporating new ideas to the ancient works being translated. By the second half of the ninth century al-Ma’mun’s Bayt al-Hikma was the greatest repository of books in the world and had become one of the greatest hubs of intellectual activity in the Middle Ages, attracting the most brilliant Arab and Persian minds. The House of Wisdom eventually acquired a reputation as a center of learning, although universities as we know them did not yet exist at this time — knowledge was transmitted directly from teacher to student, without any institutional surrounding.

Mohammad Musa might have been the first person in history to point to the universality of the laws of physics. In the 10th century, Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen) performed several physical experiments, mainly in optics, achievements still celebrated today. The House of Wisdom included a society of scientists and academics, a translation department and a library that preserved the knowledge acquired by the Abbasids over the centuries. They also researched and studied alchemy, which was later used to create the structure of modern chemistry. Furthermore, linked to it were also astronomical observatories and other major experimental endeavors. Institutionalized by Al-Ma’mun, the academy encouraged the transcription of Greek philosophical and scientific efforts.

Often, al-Ma’mun would assign handpicked renowned scholars to perform specific translations of works. An example of such was the selection of the famous scholar Abu Yousuf Ya'qoub Al-Kindi, who had an impressive level of qualifications which included being a physician, philosopher, mathematician, geometer, logician, and astronomer, to be the one in charge of translating of the works of Aristotle. For about 500 years the city boasted the cream of intellectuals and culture, a reputation gained during the reigns of some of its most famous Caliphs (Al-Rashid, Al-Ma’mun, Al-Mu’tadhid and Al-Muktafi). From the 7th century onwards, men and women of different faiths and cultures built on knowledge from ancient civilisations making breakthroughs that have left their mark on our world.

Greek Mythology

It was the model for other libraries and similar institutions throughout the soils of Islamic civilization. A combination of heavy redevelopment during the second half of the 20th century, two decades of warfare and neglect has not been kind to Baghdad's architectural and cultural heritage. Generally, the eastern side contains the older districts while the western side is newer. The historic old quarter contains a myriad of alleys and small streets with buildings dating back to the Ottoman era or even older. The old quarter is also home to the heart and soul of Iraqi literacy and intellectual community, Mutanabbi Street. The street is lined with bookstores and outdoor book stalls as well as cafés to discuss matters of the day.

From 1851 to 1852 and from 1861 to 1867, Baghdad was governed, under the Ottoman Empire by Mehmed Namık Pasha.[76] The Nuttall Encyclopedia reports the 1907 population of Baghdad as 185,000. The basic framework of the city consists of two large semicircles about 19 km (12 mi) in diameter. The inner city connecting them was designed as a circle about 2 km (1.2 mi) in diameter, leading it to be known as the "Round City". These baths increased public hygiene and served as a way for the religious to perform ablutions as prescribed by Islam. Moreover, entry fees were usually so low that almost everyone could afford them.[39] In the center of the city lay the mosque, as well as headquarters for guards. The circular design of the city was a direct reflection of the traditional Persian Sasanian urban design.

The concept of a library catalog dates back to this period; books in these libraries were organized under specific genres and categories. Caliph al-Mamun was also himself adept in the branches of knowledge taught at the House of Wisdom, including medicine, philosophy and astrology, and often visited the scholars there to discuss their research. The stars and planets were perceived to influence events on earth and astrology was thus carried out with the greatest attention to detail. The heyday of Baghdad was 1,200 years ago when it was the thriving capital of the Muslim world. It was home to the House of Wisdom, an academy of knowledge that attracted brains from far and wide. Bayt al-Hikmah, like Baghdad itself, was greatly enriched under the reign of Hārūn al-Rashīd (786–809).

But it is well established and uncontroversial that the much earlier academy in Alexandria was likewise more than just a library, for it not only brought together under one roof much of the world's accumulated knowledge, but acted as a magnet for many of the world's greatest thinkers and scholars. The patronage of the Egyptian Ptolemaic dynasty, which provided travel, lodging and stipends to those men, is not so different from the government research grants that university academics worldwide receive today to carry out their research. And the reign of Ma'mūn was notable for more than just the scholarly writings of these individual geniuses. Not satisfied with setting up his seat of learning, Ma'mūn ordered the building of the first astronomical observatory in Baghdad around the second decade of the ninth century. This was the only way his astronomers could check the accuracy of the various, often conflicting, Greek, Persian and Indian astronomical texts at their disposal, most notably Ptolemy's Almagest.

For example, he commissioned the mapping of the world, the confirmation of data from the Almagest and the deduction of the real size of the Earth (see section on the main activities of the House). He also promoted Egyptology and participated himself in excavations of the pyramids of Giza. Al-Ma’mun built the first astronomical observatories in Baghdad, and he was also the first ruler to fund and monitor the progress of major research projects involving a team of scholars and scientists. His greatest legacy to science is that he was the first ruler to fund “big science”. The first city in our tour of a “History of Christian-Muslim Relations” is Baghdad.

Brought from China, paper became a new and cheaper material for writing, which was previously done on parchment from the skin of animals, a much more time consuming and expensive process. A wide range of languages including Arabic, Farsi, Aramaic, Hebrew, Syriac, Greek and Latin were spoken and read at the House of Wisdom. He took Greek words, such as "philosophia" that became "falsafa" in Arabic, and found translation solutions via what contemporary translators would call equivalents.

Precipitation is sparse (6 inches [150 mm] annually) and occurs mainly between December and April. In spring and early summer the prevailing northwesterly winds (shamāl) bring sandstorms that frequently bathe the city in a dusty mist. Baghdad was heavily damaged by aerial bombardment during the Persian Gulf War (1990–91) and again by air and ground operations during the Iraq War (2003–11). During the interwar period the city’s services and infrastructure deteriorated badly because of inattention and fiscal constraints resulting from economic sanctions imposed on Iraq by the United Nations (UN).

Investing in the future of design through scholarship and mentorship

From mandalas in Eastern spiritual traditions to modern minimalist art, the circle’s innate sense of balance resonates deeply with viewers, fostering a sense of inner harmony. With this chapter on circles, we have completed the basic part of these lessons on geometric designs. From next month on we will focus on complete patterns and motifs of increasing complexity, from both East and West. The same reasons for using, or not using, circles apply to printed projects. Unlike digital projects that are confined within a rectangular screen, you can actually create and design for a circular medium.

Don’t limit to one circle

Firstly, circles naturally draw the eye’s attention, making them perfect for emphasizing key elements of your ad. Circles can highlight the key messages of your brand that you want to share with your followers. Adding a circle in the middle lets your brand visually communicate its commitment to holistic experiences and community engagement. Choosing the right color depends on many factors; the color of the circles in the design goes hand in hand with the brand identity and the target audience. Also, we can’t overlook the aesthetics of the entire design; hence, you must be mindful of color theory.

As a dominant shape or frame.

But be careful, using too many circles can create a look of instability or chaos because every element is begging to be seen. They are fluid, and connected to movement and mobility (think about the wheel). Because circles are a part of the natural world – the shape of the moon, flowers, fruit – the object is considered real and represents life. Use a geometric circle design along with an indicator of progress (numbers or percentages) to draw attention to your ad.

Circles in Other Projects

She founded a graphic design studio called Lodesigns and launched an accompanying podcast for creatives to talk about their passion and share their struggles. As a multicultural student, Lauren wants to provide resources for the future generation of designers like herself and inspire them to dedicate themselves to pursuing their passion. Reading through each applicant’s story and looking at their impressive portfolios has been hugely inspiring. It’s shown us that a new wave of talented, passionate, and diverse individuals, who are full of potential, socially conscious and committed to helping bring about meaningful change, are now entering the world of design. This next generation of designers is poised to not only shape our industry, but also to help society become more equitable for all.

Secondly, the shape of a circle signifies unity and completeness, subtly reinforcing the message that your product or service is essential. Repetitive circles create an illusion of endless patterns, allowing you to convey movement, energy, and depth. The circle holds deep spiritual significance in Eastern cultures such as Hinduism and Buddhism.

Unique Circular Graphic Design Ideas

That’s why we love making Diwali Instagram posts with unique circle designs to share the holiness of the bright festival. Ever wondered why circles hold such profound spiritual significance? If you thought circles were just famous in geometry, you’d be surprised to see how circles have been used spiritually in many cultures for ages.

Place the dry point on C, let the opening be equal to the side of the first square, and draw a quarter of a circle DB. Move the dry point to F and draw an arc that cuts the extended CD at H. With the dry point on E and the compass open to EC, draw an arc that cuts the extended AB at G. Flyers, stickers, cards and other materials that are cut to shape have the extra value of being different when used in a more unconventional way. If you want to organize giveaways, promotions, or contests, concentric circles are the way to go. They attract the user’s attention and make them want to go straight to the target.

If you pair it with a hand-lettering font that has round edges, you’ll add consistency to the visual. Look at this great movie poster and get inspired to use colorful circles and create a pattern. If you feel like your design is getting out of hand and feels too crowded, go for a pop of color. Choose a bright color for the circle and keep everything else black and white.

In short, you’ll be hearing (and seeing) a lot from the Design Circle. If you truly want to be creative with your brand identity, having a unique design is a must. We hope you find your creative inspirations from the new DocHipo templates using circles in design in staggering forms. Circle designs establish a visual hierarchy by utilizing varying sizes and proportions. Larger circles act as focal points, drawing immediate attention, while smaller circles add detail and interest. With fresh, interested eyes Sue absorbed a myriad of cultures that left her with a deep appreciation of the unique and profound impact of art and design.

While a circle can create interest, it can create a dilemma when it comes to cropping and space. (Cameras don’t take round photos.) Do the circles have enough room to stand on their own so images are not jumbled? Circles as frames are most popular in portfolio design, to show a “slice” of work without showing the whole thing. The perfectly round shape – and its oblong counterparts – can be difficult to work with. The shape does not stack as well as the more standard rectangle and creates a much different overall feel. If you’ve decided to include circles in your designs, but you don’t feel like you have the skills to create a design from scratch, the best thing you can do is learn by using and modifying existing templates.

While a complete circle is excellent for positive brand vibes and showcasing your latest offers, why not add a bit of flair with some arcs of circles? They bring that edgy touch to your design, making it stand out in all the right ways. DocHipo presents impressive 4th of July templates that you can use to grab attention with unique categories and circle graphic design. You can also use a circle creatively in design to draw attention to the latest offers, reinforcing the brand’s message of ongoing innovation and seamless customer experiences.

In Buddhist art, the Samsara wheel, or the Wheel of Life or Bhavachakra, is a circular symbol representing the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. For example, in Egyptian mythology, the sun god Ra was often depicted as a solar disc, symbolizing life, warmth, and regeneration. Similarly, in Celtic symbolism, the circle, known as the Celtic knot, represents eternal life and the interconnectedness of all things.

With every arc, your design comes alive, telling a story of innovation and forward-thinking that captivates your audience from the first glance. Circle Logo brings everyone together under one symbolic embrace, instantly connecting with your audience on a deeper level. You can use arcs in your design to tell the world about your brand story and outstanding services. The combination of circles with colors adds another layer to their psychological impact. For instance, warm-toned circles may elicit energy and excitement, while cool-toned circles evoke calmness and tranquility.

The House of Wisdom: How Baghdad Became a Center of Learning

baghdad's house of wisdom

Today, all that remains of Ctesiphon is the shrine town of Salman Pak, just to the south of Greater Baghdad which is where Salman the Persian is believed to have been buried. Ctesiphon itself had replaced and absorbed Seleucia, the first capital of the Seleucid Empire, which had earlier replaced the city of Babylon. As for the philosopher Kindi, who outlived Ma'mūn, he seems to have fallen victim to a conspiracy led by the Banū Mūsa brothers, who had grown jealous of his extensive personal library and plotted against him until they persuaded the then caliph, al-Mutawakkil ( ), to expel him from the House of Wisdom. He lived his remaining years a lonely man and after his death his philosophical work fell into obscurity. Baghdad had reached its highest reputation and glorious status during the reigns of the Caliphs Al-Rasheed, Al-Ma’moun, Al-Mu’tadhid and Al-Muktafi. Its buildings had expanded widely on both banks and sides of the river Tigris, in a form of urbanism resembling that of contiguous towns, and its population had reached about one million.

When Baghdad was centre of the scientific world

The existence of the House of Wisdom is presently disputed, as is its form and function. Arabist Dimitri Gutas posits in his 1998 book that “House of Wisdom” is a translation error from Khizanat al-Hikma, which he asserts simply means a storehouse, and that there are few sources from the era during the Abbasid Era that mention the House of Wisdom by the name Bayt al-Hikma. This theory is debatable, owing to the destruction of the Round city of Baghdad and conflicting sources in both academic texts and poetry. It is likely, given the Abbasid Caliphs’ patronage of the arts and sciences, that an extensive library existed in Baghdad, and that scholars could have access to such texts, judging by the volume of work produced by scholars centered in Baghdad. Without consistent naming conventions, a physical ruin, or corroborating texts, the phrase “House of Wisdom” may just as well have been a metaphor for the larger Academic community in Baghdad rather than a physical academy specializing in translation work. The House of Wisdom grew rapidly with the acquisition of texts from Greece, Persia and India, swelling with the addition of the Arabic translations of these texts, a process that was already becoming an industry in Baghdad.

Amid Regional Turmoil, Iraq Looks for Integration

Although some of the princes of the previous Umayyad dynasty had begun to gather and translate Greek scientific literature, the Abbasids were the first to foster Greek learning on a large scale. Many of these libraries were private collections intended only for the use of the owners and their immediate friends, but the libraries of the caliphs and other officials soon took on a public or a semi-public character.[60] Four great libraries were established in Baghdad during this period. Another was established by Sabur ibn Ardashir in 991 or 993 for the literary men and scholars who frequented his academy.[60] This second library was plundered and burned by the Seljuks only seventy years after it was established. This was a good example of the sort of library built up out of the needs and interests of a literary society.[60] The last two were examples of madrasa or theological college libraries.

Books

Among the books that al-Mansur initiated their translations were the book of Al-Sind Hind a book on mathematics and a huge collection of Aristotle, Euclid and of Claudius Ptolemy writings. In 750, the Abbasid dynasty replaced the Umayyad as the ruling dynasty of the Islamic Empire, and, in 762, the caliph al-Mansur (r. 754 – 775) built Baghdad and made it his capital, instead of Damascus. Baghdad’s location and cosmopolitan population made the perfect location for a stable commercial and intellectual center. The Abbasid dynasty had a strong Persian bent, and adopted many practices from the Sassanian Empire – among those, that of translating foreign works, except that now texts were translated into Arabic.

Synagogues and Jewish heritage

At the House of Wisdom, in Baghdad, scholars pored over Indian books on mathematics. These works used a set of ten symbols to represent numbers-not letters of the alphabet, as in Baghdad and Rome. In the early 800s, mathematician Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi wrote a book on how to do math using the Indian system. Eventually, people all over Europe followed Al-Khwarizmi's example-and switched to the "Arabic" numerals we use today. The Bab al-Sharji district in the centre of Baghdad derives its name, which means east gate, from the medieval fortifications of the city. During the brief British stay at the end of the first world war, its gatehouse was used as a garrison church.

European knowledge from Arabick roots

The storage space was called a ganj (“treasury”), a term equivalent to the Arabic khizānah. The historical approach has determined the research framework of gathering relevant information about the House of Wisdom and its administrative and intellectual impact on emergence of new public and private libraries. The history of libraries is a history of human thought for libraries have been the stronghold of thoughts preserving them and passing them from generation to generation. We can say that among the first centers of human civilization intellect was the library of the Mesopotamian peninsula a saying that has been proved correct by different Cuneiform script writings.

City layout

It is said that the number of higher institutes during his reign reached 332, and they were packed with students pursuing various subjects in the Arts and in the Sciences.(ref). These were built in according to the finest style, and most of them were in mosques and monumental buildings (Mashahid); this figure excludes the equivalent of primary schools (Katateeb) not including schools. The House of Wisdom was also referred to as Al-Hikma Bookstore (Khizanat Al-Hikma), and The House of Wisdom Bookstore of Al-Ma’moun (Khizanat Dar Al-Kutub Al-Ma’mouniya).

During this time, Sahl ibn Harun, a Persian poet and astrologer, was the chief librarian of the Bayt al-Hikma. Hunayn ibn Ishaq (809–873) an Arab Nestorian Christian physician and scientist, was the most productive translator producing 116 works for the Arabs. Al-Ma’mun established the House of Wisdom, putting Hunayn ibn Ishaq in charge, who then became the most celebrated translator of Greek texts. As “Sheikh of the translators” he was placed in charge of the translation work by the caliph. Hunayn ibn Ishaq translated the entire collection of Greek medical books, including famous pieces by Galen and Hippocrates. The Sabian Thābit ibn Qurra (826–901) also translated great works by Apollonius, Archimedes, Euclid and Ptolemy.

The city was rebuilt and flourished under Ilkhanid rule, but never rose to its former glory. It was briefly occupied by Safavid Persia in 1508, but fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1534. With the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, Baghdad fell under the British Mandate in 1920 and became the capital of the independent Kingdom of Iraq in 1932 (converted to a Republic in 1958).

The libraries that have flourished following the example of the house of wisdom's have had their doors open to scholars from all over the world. Libraries have had almost the same kind of translated books that were culled from scholarships of dozen languages. The house wisdom was a center of knowledge and education, it was a rival of the Constantinople's if it did not exceed it.

baghdad's house of wisdom

It is likely that without the Muslim libraries, modern Europe's scientific and intellectual progress would have been remarkably inhibited. Mahmud Ahmad Derwich has found a suitable architectural planning for Bayt al-Hikmah through his studies on the golden castle constructed by Al-Mansur. The house of wisdom composed of a yard surrounded by halls of two floors from its four sides, it was headed by a penthouse on a row of pillars. In the middle of every side among the four sides of the yard there were halls topped by semi-cylindrical dome of 25 cubit. The main hall leads to a square shape room above it there was a big dome with 80 cubit high, the main hall also has a statue of knight holding a spear that spins with the spear. There have been many studies on history of Islamic libraries (Houses of Wisdom) that evolved thanks to Baghdad's house of wisdom.

The Sasanian city of Gur in Fars, built 500 years before Baghdad, is nearly identical in its general circular design, radiating avenues, and the government buildings and temples at the center of the city. This style of urban planning contrasted with Ancient Greek and Roman urban planning, in which cities are designed as squares or rectangles with streets intersecting each other at right angles. The House of Wisdom flourished under al-Ma’mun’s successors al-Mu’tasim (r. 833 – 842) and his son al-Wathiq (r. 842 – 847), but considerably declined under the reign of al-Mutawakkil (r. 847–861). Although al-Ma’mun, al-Mu’tasim, and al-Wathiq followed the sect of Mu’tazili, which supported mind-broadness and scientific inquiry, al-Mutawakkil endorsed a more literal interpretation of the Qur’an and Hadith.

Al-Karkh in particular was the centre of Baʿathist political offices and of regime security services. At this point Baghdad was ruled by the Il-Khanids, part of the Mongolian Empire centered in Persia. It became a provincial capital controlled by the Jalayirid (1400–1411), Qara Qoyunlu (1411–1469), Aq Quyunlu (1469–1508), and Safavid Persian (1508–1534) – (1624–1638) empires. Thousands of architects, engineers, legal experts, surveyors, carpenters, blacksmiths, diggers, and labourers from across the Abbasid Caliphate were brought in to survey, measure, and excavate the foundations. "They say that no other round city is known in all the regions of the world," according to Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi.

It was a tragic ending for one of the most advanced, diverse and progressive cities of the age, and an ending from which it would take Baghdad centuries to recover. Following his predecessors, al-Ma’mun would send expeditions of scholars from the House of Wisdom to collect texts from foreign lands. In fact, one of the directors of the House was sent to Constantinople with this purpose.

Including Design for All early in the design process is more cost-effective than making alterations after solutions are already in the market. In fiscal year 2024, BSEE oversaw the installation and successful start to the operation of the nation’s first two commercial-scale, offshore wind projects. “I am so proud of the work that the Interior Department is doing to pursue a clean energy future as we build an offshore wind industry from the ground up. As the industry grows and innovates, our regulatory structures must keep pace,” said Secretary Deb Haaland, who announced the final rule today during remarks at the 2024 International Partnering Forum. Here are some U-shaped kitchen ideas that will help you to create a functional and stylish space. Hanukkah A new stamp celebrating the joyous Jewish holiday of Hanukkah will be issued in 2024. The art is a graphic depiction of a hanukiah, the nine-branch candelabra used only at Hanukkah, with all candles lighted, signifying the last evening of the holiday. The artwork is created mostly in blue and white, common Hanukkah colors. Antonio Alcalá, an art director for USPS, designed and illustrated the stamp art. Celebration Blooms Similar in design to the 2-ounce Wedding Blooms stamp, this floral Forever stamp can be used on the RSVP envelopes often enclosed with wedding invitations.

This kitchen has been given a characterful update with paint, artwork and a rather delightful floral arrangement. Daylight bounces off the white walls and ceiling, enhancing the airy feel of the kitchen. By choosing white for cabinetry, ceilings and walls, the boundaries between surfaces blur, giving the impression of a compact U-shaped design that gradually opens up as you move around. To minimize making solutions for people with different needs look as if it costs additional effort, universal design bridges this by making inclusion an obvious matter in designs for the everyday world. A digital design that follows WCAG guidelines has sufficient color contrast with background and text colors and integrates keyboard navigation in interfaces for easy motor access.

Use Tile to Define Space

It’s an approach that considers the needs of all users and allows for variations of one design so as to reach them all. By including users with disabilities early on, you ensure you consider their needs and cater to them in full, rather than revisit them later with adjustments to your initial release. The belief that accessibility and usability go hand in hand is the foundation of universal design.

Be sincere, honest and receptive to everything that comes out of the testing process. These insights can then be incorporated to improve your solution. Testing is always an iterative process and will never have a final solution. You may choose to stop for a while but keep revising your design over time, or your design can become obsolete. Designs should provide interactions that minimize hazardous and unintended actions, warnings and fail-safe features. This also prevents the adverse consequences of accidents and errors.

Disability ergonomics should be taught to designers, engineers, non-profits executives to further the understanding of what makes an environment wholly tenable and functional for individuals with disabilities. However, it was the work of Selwyn Goldsmith, author of Designing for the Disabled (1963), who really pioneered the concept of free access for people with disabilities. His most significant achievement was the creation of the dropped curb – now a standard feature of the built environment.

The concept isn’t specific to websites or printed creative work, it extends to every field of design. If you can pare back cupboards to the minimum, you may find you have capacity for a table and chairs. Think outside the box when it comes to boosting storage in a small U-shaped kitchen.

It will have scalable interfaces that can be easily magnified through external accessibility software without breaking. Just like anything, you must check your solutions before you bring it to reality. To check, invite users to conduct testing to identify pain points.
